In 2006, the U.S. Mint started the Buffalo Gold series. Both the bullion and proof versions proved to be an immediate smash hit not only with bullion buyers but collectors as well. The combination of a .9999 fine gold coin (compared to .917 for the Gold Eagles) and a classic popular design made this coin an exciting addition to the modern coin realm. In the beginning, the Buffalos were only offered in a $50 one ounce form and questions quickly arose asking when the Mint would release fractional sized buffalos. In 2008, the Mint finally did just that. In total, 9 different buffalos were produced in 2008. There were $5, $10, $25, and $50 W-Mintmarked Proof and W-Mintmarked Mint State coins and a $50 bullion mint state coin without a mintmark. The fractional coins were released towards the end of 2008 and had a relatively short sales window. As soon as the sales ended from the Mint, the prices immediately began to rise as the market started to realize how low the mintage for these coins had been. The low mark for the bullion coins at that time had been around 135,000 and for the proofs it had been 59,000 a year after the 245,000 mintage of 2006 proofs. None of the 2008 Buffalos (other than the bullion coin) made it over 20,000 coins with the Mint States generally putting up lower number than the Proofs, the exception being the $25 half-ounce coin. The $25 Mint State had a mintage of 16,908.
